Can you say all you need to in 140 characters or less?
The thought crossed my mind how frustrating it can be to have to limit yourself into a set number of characters on social networking sites such as twitter! however, me being me, i decided to turn this into a challenge!
I am Sierra Leonean and we as a people have a rich history which has meant that we are among one of the most diverse of people, in my humble opinion. Despite this, after being to many events hosted by Sierra Leoneans, i have come to appreciate one vital aspect of our character, and that is the pride of mastering the use of the English language. Countless times have I been to a wedding reception where the host will spend too long on a speech which seems to be run on unnecessarily large words that often, when put side by side, dont always make the sense that was intended.
You cant do this on twitter.
One, because often, the audience will not understand (as it is a social ‘networking’ site) and two, because you’re only allowed 140 characters. Albert Einstein said it best when he pointed out that “If you can’t explain it simply, you don’t understand it well enough”. And this concept doesn’t end with tweets. Of course, your mastery of any language is an admirable trait but the greatest challenge and test I put myself through is explaining something complex to a child who has no idea what i’m talking about. You have to be clear and concise or they will be frustrated and you lose their attention, despite how passionate you may be about it!
Its similar to my thoughts on the difference between being smart and intelligent. intelligence being what you know, and smart being your ability to apply or share that knowledge! it’s of little use if you can’t when you need to! So these days, I try and fit all I need to into those characters! I also try it in conversation and get straight to the point when making an argument!
Try it! After teaching in schools, iv learned to make a game out of everything, but this one actually helps! :D

It saddens me to see how the black life that I value, is useless to many others who have yet to recognize how valuable we are to each other…
